Melissa Gracey and Cathy Alexander to spearhead 2017-2018 United Way Women United
Yearly, the 2,000-member group raises nearly $5M to fight for the education, financial stability and health of every person in our community
MIAMI (August 22, 2017) – United Way of Miami-Dade recently appointed Melissa Gracey as chair and Cathy Alexander as vice-chair of Women United, a prominent group of women leaders dedicated to building a stronger Miami through philanthropy and community service. Additionally, the group also changed its name from Women’s Leadership to Women United to align itself with United Way Worldwide’s growing, global movement representing 70,000+ women in 165 communities across six countries. The new name captures the essence of women’s leadership – a diverse and inclusive force of passionate, philanthropic women dedicated to building stronger communities.
“We are grateful to have two dynamic and committed businesswomen such as Melissa and Cathy at the helm of Women United,” Maria C. Alonso, president and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade, said. “Their determination to bring meaningful change to our community will continue to drive the great work of United Way to new heights.”
Gracey and Alexander will lead a 45-member executive council that shapes the direction of the group and is charged with: engaging current members in a series of networking activities that promote personal and professional growth; elevating the group’s impact through fundraising and volunteer projects; and growing the overall group.
Gracey is the director of marketing at Berkowitz Pollack Brant Advisors and Accountants, focused on the firms marketing strategy, branding, message development and community involvement. Throughout her 25-year career, she has worked with privately held and publicly traded companies in a range of industries, providing experienced marketing, branding and public relations strategy and leadership. In addition to being a longtime United Way volunteer, Gracey currently serves on the board of Neighbors 4 Neighbors and is an active member of the Orange Bowl Committee and Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Sports Council. She received bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Communication from Florida State University.
Alexander, vice president, private client relationship manager at TD Wealth, where she delivers private banking, lending, investment, trust and estate services to high net worth individuals in South Florida. She works closely with each client to assess their needs and develop a comprehensive plan focused on their financial goals. In addition to being vice-chair of Women United, Alexander is on the executive board of Leadership Miami for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. Alexander holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and FINRA Licenses 6, 7, 63 and 66.

To all my friends and nonfriends. I’m sorry for not being responsive to your many notes. The Chinese Lantern Festival produced by my employer, Hanart Culture is coming to Broward County, Florida! This is truly an amazing event and one that mimics "THE BLOB" (for those of you who remember this crazy cult film, it engulfs everything it touches). But, this is a happy blob and I look forward to the event’s Grand Opening at Central Broward Regional Park (Lauderhill) on November 21 for 8 weeks, Thurs-Sun. So, click event link and meet me there! Otherwise, the Blob got me. Just be understanding if I’m not as responsive as before. This amazing festival may have as many as 100,000 visitors! 🙂

Nina Zadeh is a Marketing Strategist, Social Media Manager and Influencer with a strong understanding of the social media landscape, current trends and future opportunities. After earning her MBA in Marketing from Fordham University, she founded her own creative consulting agency where she specialized in branding and strategic partnerships. Some notable partnerships include Whole Foods Market, Dress for Success, Lord & Taylor and the Miami Heat.
Bertha Diaz is a highly skilled and accomplished communications specialist with more than 15 years of corporate experience. Prior to joining CAMC, Bertha was instrumental in the strategic planning, media relations, event marketing, as well as served as spokesperson, for high-end national lifestyle brands. Her deep understanding of media relations has led her to establish long lasting relationships with local, regional and national key publications. She is a graduate of Barry University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.
Sara Leiter is a whiz at creating valuable partnerships and a pro at helping companies craft strategic communication campaigns, win high-value press coverage, and pump maximum business-development value. Sara’s ability to leverage solid media connections, to land clients quality placements, is inimitable. Sara is a Florida International University graduate, with a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications and Public Relations.

Shannon Cooney, another recent University of Miami graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Communication, brings a passion for travel and storytelling. It all started when she travelled to Scotland where she studied at the University of Edinburgh and earned a minor in English Literature. Prior to joining CAMC, Shannon gained valuable corporate communications experience working on the PR team of one of the largest companies in the U.S. As a member of the CAMC social media team, Shannon helps clients tell their stories across various digital platforms.
