Career Spotlight: Richard Murry, executive VP at Durée & Co.
Who: After 14 years running his own Miami Beach firm, The Murry Agency, Richard Murry has joined the public relations firm Durée & Co. as executive vice president in Fort Lauderdale. It’s a good move, Murry says. He and Durée Ross have collaborated
for years, and they share the same philosophy: that a commitment to nonprofit clients is a way to give back to the community.
Experience: Zynyx Marketing Communications, Coral Gables; Patrice Tanaka & Co., New York; before that, fashion PR at the Dallas apparel mart.
Education: Bachelor’s degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, in journalism and broadcast film.
Community engagement: Pridelines Youth Services, Miami Beach Pride, Winter Party Festival, Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and St. John’s on the Lake United Methodist Church.
What don’t people know about this job: Public relations is a serious business. We are the custodians of our clients’ reputations in the community.
Skill set: Be an excellent writer, first and foremost. A dash of psychology is helpful as you’re dealing with the CEO, a reporter on deadline or a vendor, all within a 30-minute timespan.

Industry wisdom: Lesson No. 1: Be as courteous and respectful to the CEO as you are to the janitor. Lesson No. 2: Be very careful with "reply all."
What’s new: Digital media and social media marketing, and, parallel to that, the decline of traditional media.
Professional development: Get out from behind your desk and get out into the community — get out there and circulate.
