Herald unveils new look in digital, print

Focus on visual storytelling to highlight digital products

New In Depth section to feature enterprise reporting on key topics

Reader responses guiding our decision-making in a new era

We know that sometimes, you want a quick news update on the phone or on the desktop during a break at work. Other times, you want to delve deeper on stories that deserve a closer look, lingering over the paper with a cup of coffee or sitting on the couch catching up on a tablet before bedtime.

This week, we’re launching a redesign of the Miami Herald digital and print editions to keep pace with your new reading habits.

Our strategy is to meet your needs for news with our award-winning journalism, taking advantage of the strengths of each platform with more analysis and perspective in print, and more videos, photos and easy-to-scan breaking news in our digital editions.

Online, there will be a new focus on visual storytelling, with larger photos, interactive maps and graphics. And because readers are increasingly turning to video for news, we’re devoting more resources to produce high-quality news, sports and features videos.

In the newspaper, we are reorganizing the content to emphasize what we do best: award-winning local news and in-depth investigations unmatched by other sources of news. You’ll find all of our current local and business news in the A-section, as well as new In Depth coverage daily featuring explanatory and deeper reports with more background and perspective.

On Saturday, we’ll continue to provide national and international coverage, with an emphasis on the regions that most impact South Florida — the Caribbean and Latin America. On weekdays, the Opinion and Other Views pages remain in the A-section, and on Saturday, we are adding back the Opinion page, which will feature even more of readers’ letters to the editor.

Sports and Tropical Life remain separate sections so you can better share the paper, as will Business Monday, Neighbors and Weekend. (For a guide on where to find your favorite features, see miamiherald.com/new).

On Sunday, the day readers still have the most time to spend with us, we’re taking the concept of original, deep reporting across all sections. We’re launching a new In Depth section to highlight enterprise reporting on local, state, politics, national and Latin American issues. It also will be home to our top news columnists — Fred Grimm, Carl Hiaasen, Andres Oppenheimer, Leonard Pitts and Fabiola Santiago — as well as our Opinion and Editorial pages.

To make these changes, we consulted with hundreds of our readers, asking for feedback on everything from how you get your news fix to what you thought of different configurations of the newspaper. Your responses guided our decisions, giving us confidence that we are bringing you a range of news products to keep you connected throughout the day.

Here is what isn’t changing: our deep commitment to award-winning journalism that keeps you informed and engaged, that celebrates our community, that shines a light and makes a difference.

It’s what we have been doing for 112 years — and we intend to continue to be South Florida’s most trusted source of news and information for decades to come.
